“You’re Worth It: Setting Rates, Collecting Bills and Saying No”

Keynote Speaker: Francine Friedman Griesing, founder and Managing Member of Griesing Law, LLC

Many of us are aware of the pay discrepancy between men and women in the United States, which has seen only incremental progress over the past 60 years. On average, women still make only 76 cents for every dollar a man makes and given past trends, it is projected that pay equity won’t be reached until 2059. There is still a long way to go, as many institutional and cultural factors contribute to economic inequality for women, requiring a multifaceted solution from all parties. As women push for and demand fair treatment in the workplace and outside of it, it is critical that we also take a stake in our finances, as how we manage money can significantly shape our path ahead. For business owners and leaders, a critical component of success is being compensated for the work we do and at a fair rate for our services or product. As an attorney, setting hourly rates and billing clients are some of the main components of the job. However, when I opened my own firm in 2010, I had to take control of setting my rate based on the client and type of work as well as collecting payment of my bills. After receiving pushback from clients regarding rates and monthly bills, I had to be firm in asking for what I deserve for my time and be forceful in collecting my fees based on the work performed. If I had not been able to hone this skillset, my business would not still be open eight years later.

This session will discuss methods for setting and negotiating rates that reflect your worth, collecting bills for work completed and learning how to turn down work when you are undervalued. The program will include case studies from my own experience as a business owner dealing with financial challenges with clients, employees and vendors and will share strategies on asking for what you want and deserve and learning to say “no” when a project or client isn’t in your best interest or your business’s. Attendees will leave with actionable insights for handling and negotiating financial matters with clients, employees, business partners and the like, so that women leaders have the tools to reach their full economic potential, and set an example for those around them.

Can Understanding Your Emotional Intelligence Make You More Money?

Presented by Eileen Jason, Ph.D., ARTA Consulting, LLC.

Are you letting your fears wreck your relationship with money?

The connection between emotions and thinking about financial decisions is the focus of the relatively new field of neuroeconomics. These brain scans typically show how irrational we really are while making what we think are rational decisions – especially about money.

A person who is equipped with high Emotional Intelligence (EI) has the ability to self-assess, knows the strengths and weaknesses of themselves and others, and has empathy and understanding of others’ feelings. They always know how to keep calm and optimistic in life even in the most difficult challenges.

Studies suggest that those in higher job levels earned more the higher their EI scores. EI is particularly important for individuals as they ascend the managerial ranks when these more advanced skills are required.

Learn your EI score and get started making more money!

How Much Is Your Time Worth? The Secret to Capitalizing on Your Two Most Valuable (and Profitable) Resources

Presented by Angela Megasko, Market Viewpoint, LLC

The challenge for most small business owners is to avoid spreading themselves too thin. When wearing all hats, it can become overwhelming to define the activities and resources which will be most productive for the growth of their firm. This session will introduce you to maximizing the use of your two most valuable resources. Learn how to take the confusion out of who to market to, work with, and where to spend your time. Angela Megasko will explain how to focus your limited time to concretely define the tribe to whom you sell – and with whom you work. Presented by Sharon Wilson, Wilson Law Offices

Let 2018 be the year that we learn to keep what we earn. This will be an interactive session where you learn about the perils of women who take care of everybody but neglect to take care of themselves. Sharon will share actual stories compiled from 22 years of advising and assisting clients from her book, Mind Your Business! The issues are serious (wills, trusts, preservation of family, special needs children, financial stability, aging parents, divorce) but you will learn how to address these concerns head-on so you can get them off of your worry list and get on with the business of being the dynamic, money-making professionals and business women that we've proven ourselves to be.
